Karin Bubǎs

The Studies in Landscapes and Wardrobe series (2006–present) by Karin Bubaš features meticulously styled, solitary female figures set against idyllic landscapes. In each photograph, the women gaze away from the camera, absorbed in contemplating nature. The series draws from depictions of women in art and cinema, notably in the films of Michelangelo Antonioni and Alfred Hitchcock, as well as the 19th-century sublime tradition in landscape painting.

The contrast between nature and culture is emphasized through the formal, carefully selected wardrobe, which harmonizes with the landscape’s colors while appearing slightly incongruous in a natural setting. With the women’s faces obscured, their clothing and hairstyles become central elements of the composition, functioning as essential components of the scene. This framing invites viewers to reflect on the dynamic between figure and environment and to imagine the circumstances that might have brought each woman to this place.

Bubaš’s Fleur Series references the works of 19th-century French painter Édouard Manet. These meticulously assembled three-dimensional pieces convey fragility and depth in their still-life arrangements, casting shadows that blur the line between reality and illusion.
