The future can only be envisioned as we shape it, through boundless imagination or our deepest dystopian fears. At Art Toronto, ELLEPHANT’s artists choose imagination, invoking ancestral knowledge to learn from the past and envision just, thriving futures rooted in the cultures of historically oppressed peoples. Skawennati, Stanley Wany, Ekow Nimako, Glenn Gear, and Xiaojing Yan reclaim space for Black and Indigenous ways of being, here and in the future. Their works offer visions of healing, possibility, and ancestral dreams becoming reality. Through personal and cultural genealogies, each artist works with material in deeply intentional ways: pulling thread through silk, drawing and staining, collaging, beading or sculpting with black LEGO® or mushrooms.
